Hume

The Hume growth area includes Greenvale, Roxburgh Park, Craigieburn and Craigieburn West.

Located only 20 kilometres from central Melbourne, Hume is renowned for its strategic positioning at the crossroads of the Hume Highway (incorporating a railway corridor), Calder Highway and Metropolitan Ring Road.

The City of Hume boasts Melbourne Airport, the second busiest airport in Australia for passenger movements and the pre-eminent aviation hub for the southern part of the continent. Hume is a gateway city with strong capacity for long-term growth.

This growth area traverses the state's major industrial and employment region, with nearly one quarter of all jobs in the northwest region of Melbourne situated in Hume.  It is therefore the gateway to vital international and interstate markets, particularly in relation to exporting high value added manufacturing.

Over time we expect Hume will continue to play a key role in contributing to the national economy and Australia's global position, with an expectation that employment will grow to between 90,000 and 95,000 jobs.

Alongside economic growth, Hume has been experiencing significant residential growth in the last few decades. It has a diverse population with a high proportion of its residents born overseas.  We expect that the development of the growth area will result in an increase of 30,000 to 35,000 people, accommodated in around 20,000 households.

Key developers in the region include Delfin-Lend Lease, Peet and Co and Stockland, and the median lot price is $150,000.

More affordable housing and a better range of services including facilities for health, higher education and lifelong learning, will be provided alongside growth.  Opportunities will be taken to use land more efficiently and to make the most of Hume's biodiversity assets and landscape features, such as volcanic cones.
